Last Exit to Normal by Michael Harmon

Can you imagine being a 14 year old boy and having your father announce that he is gay? That's the idea in this book. Ben, the protagonist, gets into a lot of trouble for 3 years, so his father moves to Montana to live with his boyfriend's mother (and she is a unique character). The folks in Montana aren't too receptive to gays, so Ben faces a lot of prejudice because of his father. However, there are other issues explored in the book that every teen faces. There are a lot of different kinds of narrow mindedness. Ben struggles through the entire book to try to reconcile his father's sexual orientation, all the while trying to figure out what type person he himself wants to be. The book doesn't preach a position about homosexuality, and it doesn't portray the anti-gay people as being all bad (or all good). The book doesn't focus on the father's orientation, but on how the son deals with the fall out. It's a really good book.
